Holiday in France: The Language Barrier

Ok – You’re going to France. Being able to speak the language is always helpful. Not a problem we thought, Clint did A-Level French!

True, he hadn’t done too much in about 6 years so was a bit rusty but he managed to sort out the camp site quite well while the rest of us stood around in complete ignorance with polite smiles on our faces…

What he forgot to mention was that he sometimes has mental blocks and just swaps back into English…

We were walking back from the beach with our inflatable boat (I’m 25 going on 10) and the old Lady that ran the souvenier-type shop at the enterence to the camp site starts talking to us. We can all manage a bit of casual French ‘nice day’, ‘is this your baguette?’ type of thing, but soon it was only Clint who was still talking to her.
All of a sudden she said something really long and complecated sounding. We all stare at Clint expecting him to reply. After about a minute of silence he says in English ‘We didn’t even go in the sea’.
At least the people at the take away spoke English…
